These savory rolls are stuffed with hummus, onion, sundried tomato, and cheese. They are a flavorful and delicious snack or lunch! The recipe includes a sourdough bread option, but feel free to use your favorite bread dough.
1/2cup of grated cheddar cheese (exclude for vegan alternative)
Instructions
This recipe can be made with any bread dough, including store-bought pizza dough. However, I’ve included a quick sourdough bun recipe for anyone starting from scratch.
Mix the sourdough starter, water, and instant yeast in a large bowl. Stir in the olive oil and salt. Then add the flour. Knead as required to bring the dough together. Cover with a damp tea towel and allow to rise in a warm location until doubled in volume (about 2-4 hours).Â
Divide the dough into 8 to 12 even pieces (depending on how large you want the rolls to be). Sprinkle your work surface with a bit of flour. Flatten each dough ball into a pizza-like circle. Cover the circle with 2 Tbsp of hummus. Add a tablespoon of sundried tomatoes and onion. Roll the circle into a hotdog-sized shape. Place it on a greased baking tray. Continue forming each of the savory rolls in this way. (See the video above the recipe for a demonstration).
Let the rolls rise for another 2 hours.
Preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C) when you’re ready to bake the rolls. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes (until the cheese is melted and the bread is browning).
Notes
See the section above for alternative filling options. Savory rolls are perfect for all sorts of different vegetables!
To give the rolls a nice golden glow, brush them with an egg wash, milk, or plain water.
