These savory rolls are stuffed with hummus, onion, sundried tomato, and cheese. They are a flavorful and delicious snack or lunch! The recipe includes a sourdough bread option, but feel free to use your favorite bread dough.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Bread

  • 1/4 cup active sourdough starter (2 oz)
  • 1 cup chlorine-free water (7 oz)
  • 1/4 tsp instant yeast (optional, to help boost the rise)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 cups flour (11 oz)

Filling

  • 1/2 cup of hummus
  • 1/4 cup of sundried tomatoes, diced
  • 1/2 medium-sized yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1/2 cup of grated cheddar cheese (exclude for vegan alternative)

Instructions

  1. This recipe can be made with any bread dough, including store-bought pizza dough. However, I’ve included a quick sourdough bun recipe for anyone starting from scratch.
  2. Mix the sourdough starter, water, and instant yeast in a large bowl. Stir in the olive oil and salt. Then add the flour. Knead as required to bring the dough together. Cover with a damp tea towel and allow to rise in a warm location until doubled in volume (about 2-4 hours).
  3. Divide the dough into 8 to 12 even pieces (depending on how large you want the rolls to be). Sprinkle your work surface with a bit of flour. Flatten each dough ball into a pizza-like circle. Cover the circle with 2 Tbsp of hummus. Add a tablespoon of sundried tomatoes and onion. Roll the circle into a hotdog-sized shape. Place it on a greased baking tray. Continue forming each of the savory rolls in this way. (See the video above the recipe for a demonstration).
  4. Let the rolls rise for another 2 hours.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C) when you’re ready to bake the rolls. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes (until the cheese is melted and the bread is browning).

Notes

  • See the section above for alternative filling options. Savory rolls are perfect for all sorts of different vegetables!
  • To give the rolls a nice golden glow, brush them with an egg wash, milk, or plain water.
