Delicious and traditional sourdough waffles - wholegrain, sugar free and healthy

5 from 1 reviews

Traditional sourdough waffles are flavourful and delicious. This is a Belgian-style recipe with an overnight sourdough ferment. They can be savoury or sweet. For a healthy breakfast option, skip the sugar and use wholegrain flour.

Overnight Ferment

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 3 cups of milk
  • 4 cups of flour

Remaining Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup of melted butter
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar (optional, see section above for flavour options)

  1. Warm the milk so that it is roughly room temperature.
  2. Mix the sourdough starter, flour and milk in a glass measuring cup or mixing bowl.
  3. Leave the mixture to sit out on the counter for 1-2 hours.
  4. Mix in the remaining ingredients, including the eggs and butter.
  5. The waffles can be made right away. Alternatively, put the batter in an airtight container and leave it in the refrigerator until ready to cook. This is perfect for a quick and easy breakfast.
  6. Cook the waffles according to the directions for your waffle iron. Sourdough waffles generally need to cook 1-2 minutes longer than other waffle recipes.
